I HAVE A MIXED relationship with the carp. As a Norwegian, I am more a trout and salmon man. Therefore I was a little reluctant to carp-fishing in Georgia. But when you are invited to a fishing trip, you accept of course. Carp or not. Most lakes have a lot of them, and the Georgians love the fish. In Racha region, more precisely in lake Shaori they have caught carp up to 10 kilo according to the locals. That

makes angling quite interesting even for a carp novise like me. My knowledge about the fish is as I said limited, but I have tasted it. No big experience: It tasted bitter and was filled with tiny bones. So as food the fish is of no interest for me. It's for the fight: And the carp can be a hefty challenge. They are strong and put up a good fight once on the hook. And here's some of the challenge, the carp is very difficult to hook.

How to catch it.

The carp is a bottom feeder, and subsequently have to be served the bait at the bottom. Attach to hooks to the line, and add a heavy piece of led to the whole thing. The bait can be pieces of bread, corn, or roe. Remember to use tiny hooks, preferably nr 5. Then throw everything into the water and wait. It nibbles around the bait, and don’t swallow immediately, so be patient. One thing I learned was that timing is essential. In order to catch carp you need to get up early in the morning. At 6 o'clock in the morning you should already have your bait in the water.
